HWA Wildlife Consulting, LLC (previously Hayden-Wing Associates), is an environmental consulting firm based in Laramie, Wyoming.  Founded in 1980, HWA provides rapid, data-driven solutions to environmental issues faced by oil and gas, mining, wind energy, wildlife and land management agencies, and other private organizations.

We apply cutting-edge methods, tools, and technology to provide services and products that are cost-effective, timely, and reliable.  Specific areas of expertise include compliance with federal regulations (T&E plant and animal species; migratory bird protection); permitting; sensitive wildlife and plant species; NEPA writing; geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis; habitat delineation and mapping; technical counsel including document review and affidavit preparation; research design and statistical analysis; forest, range, and riparian vegetation assessments; noxious weed surveys and management; reclamation and habitat restoration.

Environmental Surveys and Monitoring

HWA surveys and monitoring for plants and wildlife has spanned decades. Our expertise includes compliance surveys for sensitive wildlife and plant species including greater sage-grouse, raptors, mountain plover, pygmy rabbits, T&E plant and animal species, and migratory birds . We also are experts in monitoring for various vegetation including sensitive species, state listed species, T&E plants, and noxious weeds.

Environmental REsearch and analysis

We are an issues-oriented research group with a focus on providing products that are readily amenable to application by our clients and the managing agencies in industrial siting, habitat protection, decision support, and other issues related to sustainable landscape management. HWA biologists know how to design research in a way that provides answers to sustainability problems, how to apply the latest methods and statistical tools, and how to present results in both scientific and non-scientific terms. HWA biologists have presented and published their work widely.

REclamation Monitoring, Planning, and inspections

HWA develops reclamation plans, including recommended seed mixes, for various projects including oil and gas, mining, wind, and solar. HWA has conducted post-construction annual monitoring, focused largely on weeds, erosion control, and native species success for projects in Wyoming, Colorado, and North Dakota. HWA personnel have also performed inspections in Colorado, working directly with the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

Aerial and Drone Surveys

HWA biologists provide efficient, accurate, and reliable aerial and drone surveys. By utilizing drones, we can provide vegetation mapping, site inspections, photogrammetry, high resolution photos, and various imaging services. We operate safely and responsibly by a remotely piloted drone and are licensed, insured, and regulatory compliant.

Avian Protection plans

HWA biologists develop avian protection field guidelines to ensure that our clients and their contractors are aware of and comply with all federal and state regulations pertaining to migratory birds, including species listed under the Endangered Species Act, and to provide guidance and protocols for when field personnel encounter birds and/or nests on and around property and facilities.

NEPA Compliance

HWA has extensive experience with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and has prepared Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), Environmental Assessments (EA) and Biological Assessments (BA) and Evaluations (BE) for a wide variety of projects. Since 1985 HWA has completed wildlife and vegetation sections for over one hundred NEPA documents.

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)

HWA have extensive experience in design, development, and implementation of spatial analysis and remote sensing applications. HWA personnel perform a variety of GIS tasks including geodatabase design, creation, and maintenance; feature creation via Global Positioning Systems (GPS) collection, heads-up digitizing (HUD), remote sensing image classification, change detection, and  automated feature extraction; geostatistical sampling; feature attribution, editing, and maintenance; data review and quality assurance; metadata creation, editing, and maintenance; GPS data differential correction; and spatial modeling and analyses.
